Can You Sell Templates Made With Canva Elements? What’s Allowed and What Gets You in Trouble

Almost every new template seller hits the same wall. You open Canva, drop in a pretty frame, a doodle, a photo, maybe a font, and then a small voice says: “Wait, am I even allowed to sell this?”

I’d rather you ask now than after you’ve listed 20 products.

The direct answer: yes, you can use Canva elements inside a template you sell, as long as the finished design is original, the buyer has to edit it, and you never sell the elements on their own. If the template includes Pro content, you must deliver it as a Canva template link, not a PDF or flattened file. That’s what Canva’s own help center says, and it’s the rule to build around.

Can You Sell Templates That Use Canva Elements?

Yes. Canva’s help center says Free and Pro content can both be used in an original template. What you can’t do is sell Canva’s content by itself, or make small tweaks and call it new.

Canva has grown huge, which is why the rules get so much attention. It had about 260 million monthly active users in 2025, with 21 million paying subscribers, and revenue of around $3.5 billion that year (DemandSage, 2025). With that many people designing, a lot of them are selling, and Canva’s policy is the thing every seller is judged against.

Here’s what counts as “original” in plain language: you add your own layout, structure, text, and design decisions. A page with Canva’s frame, your own color palette, your own layout of text boxes, and instructions for the buyer is a template. A single Canva element with a border around it is not.

What Counts as “Standalone Use” of a Canva Element?

Standalone use means the element is basically the product. Using it unchanged, or only resizing, recoloring, cropping, outlining, or adding a simple border, counts.

Examples that are NOT okay:

A sticker sheet made of Canva elements
A “clipart bundle” exported from Canva graphics
A single Canva illustration with a frame, sold as wall art
Any pack meant to be used in other apps like Procreate or Photoshop

Examples that ARE okay:

A weekly planner where Canva shapes and icons are part of the layout
A social media template set where the text, structure, and spacing are your own
A checklist or workbook where decorative elements support your content

A good test: if you removed the element, would you still have a product? If the product disappears without the element, it’s probably standalone use.

What Happens When You Use Pro Elements in a Template?

You can use them, but you must deliver the product as a Canva template link. Canva states that Pro content in templates can only be shared as a template link, not as a PDF, JPG, or another file.

This catches people on Etsy all the time. They make a planner with Pro elements, export a PDF, and list it as a download. That’s the wrong delivery method for that product.

If you want to sell a PDF, there are two clean options:

Use only Free content and your own uploads. Canva allows templates made only with Free content or your own photos to be sold as PDFs or as template links.
Keep the Pro elements and deliver a template link. I explain exactly how in how to share Canva templates with customers.

How do you spot Pro content? Look for the small crown icon on the element in the editor. When you are building something to sell, I’d filter by Free if the product is going to be a PDF.

Also remember the “needs editing” rule. A template must require the buyer to do something to it, such as typing their name or swapping a logo. A finished ebook, even one with fillable parts, doesn’t count as a template.

Can You Redesign a Canva Template and Sell It?

Only if your version is truly your own design. Canva’s rules say that minor changes like recoloring, resizing, or swapping a font don’t make something original. If you open a Canva template, change the colors, and list it, that’s not your design.

What works instead:

Start from a blank page. Build your own layout using elements as ingredients.
Use templates as inspiration, not a base. Look at what works, then rebuild with a different structure and content.
Add real value. Instructions, examples, a clear use case. A budget tracker for freelancers is more original than a recolored “monthly planner”.

I’ve seen sellers lose shops to this one. It’s not worth the risk when building from scratch only takes a few more hours.

Can You Use Canva Photos, Mockups, and AI Images in Products You Sell?

Photos follow the same standalone rule as elements. Mockups and AI images need more care.

Canva photos: fine inside an original design, not as the product itself. For unedited Pro photos in ebooks, Canva sets a 480,000-pixel limit on how large they can appear.
Your own photos: you can use these freely, including as the main part of a product.
Canva mockups: Canva’s selling guide doesn’t clearly address mockups, so I treat them as listing images only, not as something I deliver to the buyer. If I’m unsure, I read the current license or ask Canva support. I cover the mockup process in digital product mockups in Canva.
AI-generated images: Canva says these fall outside its Content License and fall under its AI Product Terms, but ownership is unclear in many countries and Canva recommends legal advice before selling them. If you want to go that route, my video on Canva AI covers the approved ways to monetize: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0ecEpOvIEE

Anything that says “unsure” in your head should become a quick check before listing, not after.

How Do You Check a Canva Design Is Safe to Sell?

Run this checklist before you publish any listing. It takes about five minutes.

Is it original? Did I create the layout, structure, and text, or did I only recolor something?
Is any element doing the job of the product? If yes, rebuild it.
Does it include Pro content? If yes, deliver as a template link only.
Does the buyer have to edit it? If it’s a finished design, it isn’t a template.
Did I use outside fonts or assets? Check their commercial license. I use Creative Fabrica for fonts and graphics when I need something custom, and I read the license on each item.
Is the listing honest? Say what the buyer gets (a Canva template link) and that they need a free Canva account.
Screenshot your proof. Save the license page and the date.

Pinning this checklist next to your desk is the cheapest insurance you can buy. And if you want to turn the same knowledge into a repeatable process, plan the content once a week and use it across YouTube, Pinterest, and email – I use Systeme.io for the email side so it runs without extra effort.

What Should You Make Instead If You Want to Sell Assets?

Make your own artwork. If you want to sell graphics, SVGs, or clipart, create original pieces outside Canva’s library, or use assets licensed for resale. You can’t build an asset pack out of Canva’s own elements.

Honestly, for beginners I’d skip that path. Templates, planners, and workbooks are easier to sell and don’t need artwork skills. If you’re choosing what to make first, start with how to choose a niche for digital products.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you make a quiz video in Canva for free?

Yes. You can build the design, add a timer, animate it, and export as MP4 on a free account. Bulk Create, which builds many slides from a spreadsheet, needs Canva Pro, and some elements and templates are Pro-only.

What size should a Canva quiz video be?

Use 1080 x 1920 px (9:16) for YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels, and TikTok. Use 1920 x 1080 px (16:9) for standard YouTube videos.

How long should a quiz video be?

For Shorts and Reels, 30 to 60 seconds with 5 to 8 questions works well. For long-form YouTube, 8 to 10 minutes with 20 or more questions is common. Shorter videos are easier to finish and test.

Can you make money with quiz videos?

Yes, through YouTube ads, selling your quiz template, or building an email list. Ad revenue has subscriber and watch-time thresholds, so many creators start with a template or a free download to earn sooner.

Can I sell a Canva quiz video template?

Yes, as long as the template is your own original design and the buyer has to edit it. If it contains Canva Pro content, you must share it as a template link, not a PDF or flattened file.

Does Canva have quiz video templates?

Yes, search “quiz” in Canva’s templates, or build your own layout from a blank 9:16 design. Building your own gives you a unique look and avoids relying on a template everyone else uses.
